One was in his 50's and the other in his 30's. These two men suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and both of them got bystander CPR. But only one survived. Which one? Most individuals would think the 30 odd year old as he was younger but in fact he was the one who died.

Both persons received CPR so was it the fact that the would be rescuers assisting the man who died, didn't know what they were doing? No, the evidence points to a much more simple reason. The man in his 50's was fortunate enough to have had a cardiac arrest at a hockey ground with an automated external defibrillator. The people who rescued this man's life used the AED to restore a normal heart rhythm. Medical study has proved over and over again that the using these machines will double or treble a victims chance of living.

In the case of the younger person, there was no AED ready at the hockey ground he was playing at. Despite the vigorous efforts of both bystanders and the emergency services, this man tragically expired. Who knows whether he could have been saved had an automated external machine been available and someone present had attended CPR classes and knew how to use it?

One death is one death so many and this event, as well as several like it, should be sufficient proof that each sports ground should be equipped with an automated external defibrillator. The public should have access to these life saving tools in all public places where large numbers of people are sometimes present or those susceptible to a cardiac arrest. Some people may think that if you are fit enough to play hockey you are not at significant risk but the statistics prove differently. There are often no symptoms of heart disorder and anyone could be the next victim.

But it is not enough to have an AED on the playground as you need individuals who know how to use them. CPR classes teach these techniques so why not book your CPR class today. You never know you might save a life and imagine how that might feel?
