Since The Beginning Of Time, People Have Visited Sacred Places For Therapy, Motivation And Direction.

Why do people engage in a spiritual journey or spiritual retreats. From age-old stone circles and jungle-tangled pyramids to gothic cathedrals and mountaintop shrines, holy spots captivate us with a mysterious force. From the beginning of time spiritual tour has been well-known. People have traveled to sacred sites for therapy, encouragement and guidance. Usual American scientists may scoff at recommendations that water from holy wells can put a stop to ailments or that ancient megaliths can provide messages from the spirit world, but the idea of powerful sites has been popular to many societies for hundreds and hundreds of years.

The oldest well-known pilgrimage place is Mount Kailash in Tibet, which has long been a holy travel destination for about 15,000 years. Trudging the 32-mile trail around Kailash takes roughly three days, at altitudes as elevated as 18,000 feet. Buddhists say the ritual circumambulation eliminates the sins of a single life time, and 108 times around the mountain will permit you to make it to Nirvana.

South America's most famous spiritual spot, Machu Picchu, is a mountaintop citadel about 60 miles northwest of Cusco in Peru. You can find several hundred stone structures, built on terraces and joined by a maze of stone notches and pathways.

Boosted by the breathtaking natural surroundings, the sense of Machu Picchu is as sacred and motivating as any cathedral. Some structures, like the Temple of Three Windows, are made from massive stone blocks that weigh up to thirty tons and fitted together with no mortar. It is totally mind-blowing to consider how such work could have been completed by a supposedly "primitive" culture, a lot of people believe to be pre-Incan by centuries.

These days you do not have to go out of North America to find sites widely known for miracles. In Chimayo, New Mexico there is an adobe chapel where 2,000 devotees gather each Good Friday, and 300,000 travelers are drawn each year. In a little room at the back of the chapel, often called the "Room of Miracles," is a floor hole through which pilgrims scoop out sand, believed to have therapeutic elements. The room's walls are lined with hundreds of letters and photos from pilgrims thankful for the cure they declare, they received.

Sedona, Arizona also has been a spiritual travel destination since prehistoric time to the current day. Not just the area's Hopi and Navajo, but natives from as far as Central America and Canada traveled there for therapy and learning long before Europeans invaded North America. The site's wonderfully-shaped red sandstone rocks are said to release magical energy partly due to their high concentration of magnetic iron.

Sedona was inhabited by aboriginals from the four holy directions: Yavapai from the West, Apache from the East, Athabascans from the North, and the Hopi ancestors from the South. This seems to be the way with lots of spiritual travel sites. They are at first identified as spots of natural earth energy, then, over time, the land is developed by placing stone circles, monoliths, cathedrals, shrines etc. Over the centuries, as humans grouped to celebrate or worship at the places, they integrate their own human energies.
